Is Beagle a good choice for a first owner?

So you've chosen a beagle as your first pet?

Congratulations! You've made a good choice, beagles are one of the most loyal, devoted and fun breeds to have. Each one has a different personality and way of doing things.

That in itself is where there may be a problem, especially for the uninitiated.

They can be destructive

Like any puppy a beagle puppy will need constant love and attention. If you don't provide it then they sure as heck are gonna make their own fun. This sometime could involve some of your precious shoes, hats, headphones etc being used as a chew toy.

To remedy this we'd advise getting a good selection of toys for your hound to play with and chew, especially when a beagle is teething they need something to just chow down on.

They are great company

The unique personality and character of a beagle makes them feel like true individuals. At Mad About Beagle HQ we have two beagles, a girl named Skye and a boy named Archer.

Skye is protective and howls at any would be intruders that dare pass our door, but she's super affectionate and just loves to curl up and cuddle. Archer on the other hand is extremely laid back and more of a loner. However, he's super smart and when you're not looking he can open doors, climb up onto tables and get any delicious bits of food that you've left out!

It's these unique personalities that make the beagle a fantastic companion.

They can shed a lot

Whilst beagles are short hair dogs if not regularly groomed they can shed a lot! My advice is to learn to love the fur. It gets absolutely everywhere and no item of clothing or furniture will be safe. Learn to love the fur, and get your beagle groomed often. It doesn't have to be a professional that does it although I'd advise caution about clipping their nails yourself as unlike our nails, dogs nails have a nerve that runs through them.

They are always happy

There's nothing better than after a long day at work to be greeted by a wagging tail that is absolutely genuinely, without any pre-conditions, happy to see you. Beagles are full of energy and whilst this does need to be burnt off with regular walks they will often just want to play with you, the person they love the most.

It's this reason why I believe that even though beagles can be challenging, if you're well prepared, have the time, and have some space in you heart for one more being to love then a beagle is the perfect choice.

Your patience, attention and care will be rewarded tenfold for years to come.
